Tenebrae Prayer Service
April 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
“Tenebrae” is the Latin word for “shadows” or “darkness”.
The Tenebrae Prayer Service is an occasion for quiet reflection on the momentous events of Holy Week, to experience the extinguishing of the light, in commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross, and his lying dead for three days in the dark tomb.
(Philippians 2:8) – “Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the cross. Because of this God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.”
This traditional service includes singing of Psalms and reciting of prayers while the illumination of the sanctuary is gradually diminished, until at the end of the service we remain in darkness, then quietly exit. This service helps us prepare for the Easter Triduum that begins on Holy Thursday and ends with the Easter Vigil. The Tenebrae Prayer Service, where light fades to darkness, is a mirror image of the darkness giving way to light at the Easter Vigil Mass just a few days later.
If you have never attended a Tenebrae Prayer Service — make plans to pray with us on Wednesday, April 17! All are welcome.
