Holy Thursday Evening Mass
April 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Evening Mass on Holy Thursday commemorates the tremendous events that begin our Easter Triduum, the three days that end with our Easter celebration. Gathering for the Passover meal, Jesus began the evening in a startling way – he washed the feet of his disciples. He also foretold his own betrayal and death. In consecrating the bread and wine, he gave us his own body and blood in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. In his words “Do this in memory of me,” he gave us our first priests. Following the meal, he went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray, and there we know he would be arrested and condemned to die.
Following the Mass, the priest removes the consecrated hosts to a place of reposition. The altar is stripped of decoration, and the crucifix is covered. During the next three days, this bare altar helps us to experience the sorrow, suffering and darkness as we journey with Christ through the Triduum liturgies, commemorating his suffering, death, and burial in the darkness of the tomb.
Holy Thursday is not a holy day of obligation, and it IS a longer Mass than usual, but it is an amazing way to be with one another and with Jesus on this important day, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is a genuinely transformative experience as we approach the end of Lent in this last three days.
